Colorectal Cancer treatment in Jaipur
Laparoscopic colon and rectal cancer surgery with sphincter preservation, so most patients avoid a permanent stoma.
About colorectal cancer
Colorectal cancer affects the large intestine (colon) and rectum. It usually develops from polyps over several years, which is why screening colonoscopy can prevent it. Symptoms include a change in bowel habit, blood in the stool and unexplained anaemia.
Dr. Ledwani performs laparoscopic colectomy and rectal cancer surgery (total mesorectal excision) with a strong focus on sphincter preservation, allowing most patients to avoid a permanent colostomy bag.
Symptoms to watch for
- Blood in or on the stool, or rectal bleeding
- A change in bowel habit lasting more than a few weeks
- Feeling that the bowel does not empty completely
- Abdominal pain, cramping or bloating
- Unexplained weight loss, fatigue or anaemia
Risk factors

Treatment options
- Laparoscopic colectomy
Removal of the affected segment of colon with its lymph nodes through small incisions, with the bowel rejoined in the same operation.
- Total mesorectal excision (TME)
The gold-standard rectal cancer operation that removes the rectum with its surrounding envelope of lymph nodes to minimise recurrence.
- Sphincter-preserving surgery
Low and ultra-low anterior resection techniques that keep the anal sphincter so that a permanent stoma is avoided wherever possible.
- Chemo-radiation for rectal cancer
Given before surgery to shrink the tumour and improve the chance of sphincter preservation.
- Liver metastasis surgery
Selected patients with limited spread to the liver can still be treated with curative intent.

Frequently asked questions
Will I need a permanent colostomy bag?
Most patients do not. With modern techniques, a permanent stoma is needed only when the tumour involves the anal sphincter itself. A temporary stoma is sometimes used for a few months to protect the join.
Is keyhole surgery safe for cancer?
Yes. Large studies show laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery gives the same cancer outcomes as open surgery with less pain and faster recovery.
Who should get a screening colonoscopy?
Everyone from age 45, and earlier for those with a family history or inherited syndromes.
